We are looking for a proactive, independent and experienced Caltrans Construction Inspector with strong Caltrans and Public Works expertise.
Position Description Summary
Inspects the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements, utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, agreements for work, and may provide construction inspection support. Documents daily progress of the work, prepares monthly progress payment request, tracks various changes, verifies time and material work, measures and documents job quantities. Documentation and information retrieval may require computer literacy skills. Construction Inspectors must have the ability to set priorities, the ability to make decisions and work effectively with minimal supervision, the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with LAWA stakeholders, contractors, construction workers, the public and must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.
- Perform inspection of major reinforced concrete structures including pile foundations, roadways, and bridges across multiple jurisdictions.
- Conduct inspections for the installation of sanitary sewer systems and storm drains, including related structures, in accordance with City and County of Los Angeles Standards.
- Perform inspections for the installation of street lighting and traffic signal systems, following the specifications set by the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.
- Apply extensive knowledge of City of Los Angeles Standard Plans/Specifications and the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Greenbook).
- Apply extensive knowledge of Cal-Trans construction Standard Plans and Specifications.
- Ensure compliance with multi-phased, site-specific traffic control plans, with a strong emphasis on pedestrian safety and routing.
- Apply knowledge of and enforce Cal-OSHA, Contractor’s and LAWA safety requirements.
- Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly and concisely documents observed construction activities and identifies issues, deficiencies, and safety concerns in a timely manner.
- Assist in reviewing and approving Contractor’s monthly progress payment request based on work completed and approved schedule of values.
- Collaborate professionally within a large team of Inspectors.
Hardware/Software Knowledge
- Computer Proficiency - Utilize electronic equipment to review project plans and contract documents including RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Working and operational knowledge of Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) used for inspection reporting and document control. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Pro, PM Web, Bluebeam, ProCore, etc.
Professional Experience Level/Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience performing inspection of Cal-Trans bridge, roadway, and structure projects.
- Minimum 5 years of experience (10 years preferred) in public works field inspection, with a focus on heavy civil and roadway construction.
- Proven expertise in the installation and inspection of sewer and storm drain systems, utility infrastructure, and traffic control measures.
- Strong working knowledge of City of Los Angeles, County of Los Angeles and Caltrans Standards.
- Ability to work effectively and communicate in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Licenses & Certifications
- 30-hour Cal-OSHA training prior to assignment. The 30-hour training will have been received within the last 4 years.
- Bachelor’s Degree of Construction Management field experience of 10 or more years of Construction Management field experience.
- Current Cal-Trans test method certifications in 100, 200, 300, and 500 series desired.
- Current City of Los Angeles Deputy Inspector Licenses; Grading, Concrete, Post Tension desired.
- 30-hour Cal-OSHA training prior to assignment. The 30-hour training will have been received within the last 4 years.
